In the case of carriage by sea, the carrier's liability is provided for by the Hague-Visby Rules of 1968.
It is limited to 2 SDR (about US$2.4) per gross kilogram, or 666.67 SDR (about US$800) per container.
This is called bill of lading insurance (a summary of these rules is provided on the back of the bill of lading).

*SDR - (Special Drawing Rights).

The SDR (Special Drawing Rights) rate is published daily and is determined based on the dollar value of a basket of five leading currencies: the US dollar, the euro, the Chinese yuan, the yen and the pound sterling.

Please note that the carrier is only liable for losses that were incurred due to its fault, therefore, losses caused by poor packaging, presentation of false information, etc. will not be compensated.

If you want to be sure about compensation when the value of the cargo exceeds the carrier's liability, and if the cargo is damaged or lost through no fault of the carrier, we recommend insuring the cargo against all risks.

The current rate for calculating SDR can be found here.
